Present. Connected. Ready to Learn.
Technology is an important part of modern life and, at Walton, we are passionate about helping children develop the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in a digital world.
However, we also believe that school should be a place where children can learn, play, talk and build relationships without the distraction and pressures of personal mobile devices.
In line with Department for Education guidance, Walton Primary Academy is a Phone-Free School. During the school day, pupils do not have access to mobile phones.
Benefits of Being Phone-Free
For most children in primary school, phones are not a consideration, but we understand that as children grow older and the digital world evolve, they may become more-common. Being a phone-free school has many benefits.
Focus
Removing personal phones and smart devices from the school day helps children to concentrate, engage fully in lessons and make the most of every learning opportunity.
Promoting Play
School is about much more than lessons. We want children talking, playing, laughing, problem-solving and building friendships face-to-face, without the distraction of screens and notifications.
Safety
Being phone-free helps reduce online pressures and safeguarding risks during the school day, while supporting children to develop a healthy and balanced relationship with technology.
Parent Advice
Being a Phone-Free School doesn’t mean we are anti-technology. We use technology extensively at Walton to enhance learning and prepare children for an increasingly digital world. Being phone-free is about helping children understand that there are also times when it is healthy and important to switch off, look up and be fully present with the people around them.
Parents can help us by reinforcing these healthy habits at home:
- Try creating regular phone-free times, particularly during family meals, homework and before bedtime.
- Talk openly with your child about the apps, games and online spaces they use, and encourage them to come to you if something online worries or upsets them.
Most importantly, model the habits you want your child to develop. Putting our own phones away during conversations and family time sends a powerful message that not every moment needs a screen.
By working together, we can help children enjoy the benefits of technology while developing the confidence and healthy habits to know when to connect — and when to switch off.
